I don’t watch much TV, but happened to have the evening news on yesterday. It was shocking when I realized nearly all of the commercials I was seeing were for some variety of prescription drug.
Since it became legal for drug companies to market directly to the public, we’ve been handing over responsibility for our health and well being to the rich white guys who run those companies. Disbelief, awe, and anger are just a few of the things I feel when I think about the implications of this scenario.
Is this the highest expression of the immensely beautiful and powerful beings we truly are? Do we honestly believe that health problems are “just a part of life” and that drugs are the only way to make and keep ourselves healthy? This must be the case else we wouldn’t continue to abuse our bodies without remorse, safe in the knowledge that we can just pop a pill to make it better.
Some may argue that “everything is fine in moderation,” and I would agree. But we are not a country of moderation! We’re only 3% of the world’s population, yet we’re the most overweight and dis-eased. We have 2-3 cups of sugary coffee a day. We eat red meat once a day. We smoke. We eat high amounts of preserved, processed, nutritionally empty foods. Of course we’re going to have health problems!
This is not the reality I want for myself or for anyone I love.
Vitality and passion for life are ours by birthright, and can only be taken away by our choice. This is our most profound gift, the ability to choose. It allows us to shape our future experience with actions we take in the present.
What will you choose?
