The following is a 3 Rune Spread on a relationship. The names have been changed for privacy, but the person who asked for the reading has been invited to comment. (Interested in a psychic rune reading? Click here for more info.)

“The issue is, John Doe’s relationship with Jane Doe.”

Present outlook: Truth obscured, possibly due to secrets being kept. Mixed signals from Jane regarding the status of the relationship. (Rune drawn: Ansuz, converse)

Challenge you must overcome: With eyes wide open, ask yourself (and answer honestly) whether this love is fulfilling. From my perspective, it doesn’t seem to be. Though no relationship is perfect, if you spend more time giving than receiving, more time loving than being loved, and more time feeling down than up, this is not the love for you. If there is an ounce of truth to what I’ve said here, you deserve much, much more. (Rune drawn: Fehu)

Best possible outcome if the challenge above is overcome: Awakening to what you truly want and need in a relationship, and coming to the realization that this relationship contains little of either. Your choices are to remain and continue feeling malnourished in love, or to claim your right to a mutually fulfilling, mutually loving, mutually respectful relationship and move on. Happiness and peace may be yours if you choose the latter. (Rune drawn: Hagalaz)

I hope this has helped you, John. Please let me know if I can clarify anything I’ve said above.

Respectfully,

Jerome

WunjoToday’s rune is Wunjo. It’s commonly known as “joy,” but its meaning runs deeper than simple happiness on a personality level.

In his book Futhark: A Handbook of Rune Magic, Edred Thorsson offers the simplest, most concise, and yet most profound explanation of this rune’s meaning I’ve ever seen:

When all members of the clan are harmoniously working together, while integrated into their environment in a syncretic manner, a true state of holiness exists. (34)

In this context syncretic means growing together by setting aside differences and working toward a common goal. It seems the Germanic tribes, with whom the Runes originated, knew the value of syncretism and what would happen without it. In the words of American writer, historian, and philosopher Will Durant,

A great civilization is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself from within.

What was true for the tribes of the Migration Period is still true today, though in a broader context. If petty differences are set aside and all find and use their gifts for the greater good, the global tribe will continue to evolve. One way to experience the essence of Wunjo, the “true state of holiness” Thorsson spoke of, is to do anything that shifts our focus from our own wants and needs to those of others.

I look at this rune today and ask myself, “What is my role in the tribe?” As I commit to finding and living that role, I experience the joy of Wunjo.

Edit on 3/15/11: I came across this quote and thought it was appropriate:

When you cease to make a contribution, you begin to die.

–Eleanor Roosevelt

A client contacted me with a request to give a reading on his relationship. No background information was given or solicited, except for the names of the two people involved. Here are the results:

Overview: Ehwaz, converse

EhwazThe relationship isn’t going well. There is disharmony and confusion about how to move forward – you’re unsure what to do at this point. Trust and loyalty are issues – big ones.

Fehu, reversedChallenge: Fehu, reverse

Differences when it comes to money – making it, saving it, and/or spending it – are present. Can these views & behaviors be reconciled? I’m not sure. These differences are part of the trust and loyalty issues mentioned above.

KenazAction: Kenaz

Radical renewal is called for. This renewal can take one of two forms – either a break up or an agreement to self-examine, sacrifice, and forgive past transgressions for the good of the relationship. Please understand that you can’t make her agree to self-examine, sacrifice, and forgive.

If your partner is unwilling to reconcile, there will be signs. Silence is one. If signs are apparent, you must accept responsibility for moving on in a timely manner, for your own good and for hers.

If reconciliation turns out to be an option, know that you each must identify and let go of ideas and behaviors that hurt the relationship in the past. Being honest with yourselves and each other is a crucial part of this process, as is forgiveness. It also involves remaining watchful for the occasional return of old, familiar, and unproductive patterns.

Thank you for the opportunity to be of service. I sincerely hope this helps you move toward more peace and joy…if not in the present, at least in the near future.

Blessings,

J.

While meditating on the meaning of this rune a few years ago, the following imagery came to me:

A horse and rider are caught in the rain. The road has become muddy and too difficult to move on, leaving the rider little choice but to stop and wait out the storm. The wait is less bearable due to lack of fire for warmth and food. The rider feels defeated, but knows the only sensible choice is to wait.

According to Freya Aswynn in Northern Mysteries & Magick, one lesson offered by Ehwaz is how to adjust to changing circumstances (75-76). In its inverted form, difficulty adjusting to change seems implied. In my imagery above, the rider is certainly unhappy about (and having difficulty adjusting to) waiting out the storm.

In Futhark: A Handbook of Rune Magic, Edred Thorsson says “Ehwaz is a combination of two sympathetic, yet dually arrayed forces or entities that work harmoniously together toward one goal” (59). With horse and rider, the latter’s progress is dependent on the former’s ability/willingness to move. Delving deeper into this duality, I begin to see the rider as mind and the horse as heart/emotion. The rider is less “in the moment” because he’s focused on the destination, and anxiety and restlessness arise from difficulty in adjusting to circumstances. The horse, a being of instinct and impulse that knows only the present, simply is regardless of whether it’s galloping down the road or standing motionless in the rain.

It’s a short leap to relate Ehwaz reversed to the challenges inherent in overcoming addictive behavior. Horse (body/instinct/impulse) has been trained by rider (mind) to a certain pattern of behavior. Anyone who’s spent any time around horses knows that getting them to take action contrary to their training or will is a difficult task. As someone who’s struggled with addictive behaviors, I can say that though I was keenly aware of (and very unhappy with) the destructive patterns I was engaging in, the impulse to follow through with those behaviors nearly always took precedence.

How are these patterns undone? I’m not entirely certain, though I do know that impulse and instinct must be retrained, and that takes time.

The new pink Ouija board by HasbroTwo years ago the Hasbro Company released a pink version of the classic Ouija board, presumably to revitalize Ouija’s appeal and help it remain a slumber party mainstay. A recent story by Fox News seems to have catapulted this “pink portal to the other side” to the forefront of Christian and non-Christian consciousness alike.

The buzz seems to mostly consist of Christians condemning the product as a “dangerous spiritual game” and non-Christians responding with snark (some of which is pretty entertaining – see the “reviews” link below).

Some snippets of product reviews I found at amazon.com, followed by my take on it all:

I guess it’s an indictment of the level of science education in the U.S.A. Ouija board simply works on kids pushing the marker to the letters. –reviewer Joseph P. Klein
There is inherent in using the board the possibility of demonic contact and influence, since dead people cannot be contacted. The effects are real when it “works.” –reviewer Former Astrologer
Deuteronomy 18:10 states ‘There shall not be found among you anyone who…CALLS UP THE DEAD. For whoever does these things is detestable to the Lord.’ –reviewer common sense
Based on personal experience, the first two reviews contain little bits of truth (though overall they miss the mark). Here are my thoughts on Ouija:
Q: Who (or what) moves the Ouija board’s marker?
A: Kids trying to either scare or impress their friends.
A: A discarnate spirit on the astral plane. This could be someone who’s recently passed and has not yet progressed to the higher planes of existence, but is more likely an unevolved spiritual entity. Some may dub these beings “demons,” but it’s important to understand that the Abrahamic Religions have perverted the meaning of this word, which simply meant “unclean spirit” originally. However this is precisely why Ouija can be dangerous – in using it, those without the required knowledge or respect essentially make a “phone call” to a room full of strangers, any of whom could “pick up” and some of whom may have malicious intent.
Q: If I had a child, would I let them play with a Ouija board?
A: Generally speaking, no. Though the board itself does not cause harm, the fear surrounding its use might. This fear, now embedded in our society’s consciousness, is exactly what attracts the unevolved spiritual entities I described above (and keeps them around).
Q: What qualifies me to these questions, and why do I disagree with the reviews quoted above?
A: Personal experience. On several occasions friends and family members have spontaneously visited me after passing, often with messages for me or for me to relay to others. Contacting (or being contacted by) those who’ve passed is indeed possible, and I feel strongly that ruling this out simply because one hasn’t experienced it (or worse, judging someone without “walking a mile in their shoes“) is spiritually and emotionally immature. The universe is bigger than any of us can comprehend, and there is plenty that can’t be explained by either religious doctrine or empirical evidence.
I find it ironic that zealots on each side of any religion vs. science debate seem to share the same weakness – the conviction that everything in the universe can be neatly categorized as religion or science, belief or fact, black or white, good or evil. Though it might seem desirable to live in a world where everything is so cut and dry, it would rob us of the opportunity to experience the freedom that humility brings – that quality we embody when we admit there are more questions than answers.

The issue is, “Which spiritual path would be most beneficial for T.M. to follow?”

The overview of your situation: Raido, converse.

As I was pulling this rune, an insight came through quite clear. I felt distraction and uncertainty stemming from all the possible spiritual paths you see in front of you – a tug of war between your mind and heart regarding what you “should” do. Know that “shoulds” do not come from your higher self – they come from the personality. You will know your highest path because it will be joyful, and void of feelings of obligation. Be cautious of guilt.

The challenge you’re facing/the roadblock to overcome: Wunjo, converse

This rune’s message is elegant in its simplicity: your challenge is simply discovering your joy. Where does it reside in relation to your spirituality? What makes you feel enlivened, connected, and whole? What fills you with hope and brings you peace? Answer these questions and you will recognize your spiritual path.

The action you’re being prompted to take: Laguz, converse

It is time to alter your rhythm of life. A new cycle lay just beneath your spiritual waters. You may feel as though you’ve been out of step, “missing the beat.” This is so simply to alert you that a new rhythm is waiting to be discovered. What is the beat you march to? You already know it’s not what is used to be. Ask for guidance and listen. It will come.

Love and Light,

Jerome

“The issue is, P.A.’s marriage and true love.”

The overview of your question/issue: Berkanan, converse (a.k.a. Berkana)

Stagnation to the point of suffocation – lack of growth, lack of joy – stasis. You are like a beautiful seedling, desperately trying to reach the sun, the water, and the air – all of  which are obscured by the piles upon piles of dead limbs heaped on top of you. You will not grow if you allow this situation to continue.

The challenge you currently face, or the roadblock to your happiness: Mannaz, reversed

Your heart center (4th chakra) is hollow. It is hollow because you give so much of yourself away, and reserve nothing for yourself. What’s more, what you give away is not appreciated. Spend more time thinking about your requirements for happiness instead of another’s.

The action your higher self is prompting you to take: Gebo, converse

Recognize what is limiting you and free yourself from it. Take advantage of an unexpected gift or opportunity – it is one of many ways out of the place you find yourself now. You already know this relationship is not what you would like it to be – ask yourself if you can still grow while within it, or if it is time to release it and move on. Do not be afraid that you will not be able to create better – you definitely can if you believe in the goodness and beauty in both yourself and the Universe.

Love and Light,

Jerome

Response from client:

Dear Jerome,

Thanks so much for taking the time and giving me this reading.  Yes, the runes have very clearly indicated what I’m going through right now and reflects my feelings.

Re Gebo converse, cannot figure out how I’ll be able to get out of this relationship.  What the future holds, how will I sustain myself – it all seems very scary.

Thanks so much once again.

P.

My reply:

I can see why the future seems scary. Not knowing how to go about making a change one knows must be made can be unsettling at best, and debilitating at worst.

In the reading I saw travel related to the Gebo rune – travel in the sense of going to stay with someone temporarily, as a first step. This is the “unexpected opportunity” alluded to above.

You have the strength to come out of this dark time. You are dearly loved, and are not alone.

Find a quiet space, take several deep, cleansing breaths, relax, and quiet your mind. Try holding this position for just a few minutes at first if that’s all you can manage, and practice progressively holding it for longer. In this place of peace and safety, ask the Universal Source of Love for guidance on what step to take to begin the process of leaving this relationship behind. If you don’t receive this guidance right away, don’t give up! Keep setting aside time every day to ask for guidance and to listen for it to come – eventually the whisper of what to do next will be heard, I promise.

One final thing – be like the wind. As you prepare to leave, do so silently. When you do leave, do so quickly and as invisibly as you can. Ask for guidance and protection from the Source of Love – you will get it.

I hope this has helped.

Jerome
